The Friends reunion special at HBO Max is set to finally start shooting next week. Even if HBO Max declined to comment, sources have confirmed that HBO Max’s unscripted special will begin taping in Los Angeles. Ben Winston will direct the reunion which was delayed several times due to the pandemic. The special is expected to see the comedy series cast return to the show’s original soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank.
The special will reunite stars Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc. It will also feature Friends creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. Emma Conway and James Longman are co-executive producers.
Schwimmer revealed to BBC talkshow host Graham Norton about the show: “there is one section of it that I don’t want to give away, but we all read something.”
The final episode of Friends aired on May 6, 2004, while HBO Max launched on May 27, 2020, so the premiere of the special could end up being tied to either anniversary. The special is designed to join all 236 episodes of the Emmy-winning 1994-2004 NBC series, revealed last year by WarnerMedia as the top show on the streaming platform.
