Xbox and Playstation Sales Soar in 2020

2020 was a tough year for many people, industries, and companies due to the pandemic which created economic uncertainty. While all businesses have adapted in some way, shape or form, companies generally have faced 3 scenarios: close, scale back, or scale-up. Some companies have been very lucky to be in an industry that only sees massive increases with situations like a pandemic. In Sony and Microsoft’s case, they were in luck to launch the new Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 during a time when people needed an escape.

Has the launch of these next-gen consoles been successful?

Since the launch of both these consoles by the time the calendar hit December 2020, Playstation 5 sold over 4.5 million units. Microsoft decided they do not want to share this data but the Series X/S has been the biggest launch in the history of the company. Great news for fans and investors alike!

When we take a look at Sony’s recently released quarterly report we can confirm that indeed over 4.5 million consoles had been sold. Looking at the end of the third quarter in 2020, Sony shows over 251 billion yen in global sales. That is quite a bit of money and shows that video games in general are on the rise in a world that is becoming more digital.

Microsoft cannot sell consoles quick enough and there is even an Xbox Series X console shortage that could last until June 2021. This information was released via an interview conducted by the New York Time’s Mike Spencer to the head of investor relations for Microsoft. Fans hungry to purchase the console will just have to remain patient!
